Acupuncture and Pregnancy

At this stage in a women’s life many natural changes happen. It a wonderful and exciting time, but can be worrying as well. Physical and emotional changes, like nausea, pain, bleeding can interfere with the enjoyment of being pregnant.

Acupuncture works with the women’s body and is a very safe, effective and supportive medicine during pregnancy.

Stimulation of certain acupuncture points has been shown to affect areas of the brain that are known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress, as well as promoting relaxation.

Pelvic Pain

Breech presentation with moxibastion
The herb “moxa” (Artemisia vulgaris) is used to stimulate a particular acupuncture point on the little toe. It is a non-invasive treatment that is demonstrated during one session at the clinic and then continued at home for another 7-10 days. Best gestational time for treatment: week 33-36.

Pre-birth treatments
PreBirth treatment involves a series of four treatments weekly from 36 or 37 weeks to prepare for labor. Points are used according a woman's constitution and pregnancy history. These include points to ripen the cervix, to help position the baby in the best presentation for labour and to promote optimal energy and stamina for women to enter into labor.
Research by midwifes in New Zealand has brought us more information on the effectiveness of acupuncture to prepare for an effective birth. See Debra Bett
Post-natal depression
While the mother is recovering from birth the hormones can go up and down which is perfectly normal. But depression can be very debilitating and mark this time as being unable to cope. Acupuncture is a useful tool in depression, but invaluable at the post-natal time.

Acupuncture aims to relief pain, ease congestion and improve milk-flow.
